The reasoning for each is on the summoner spells page. You may only bring one per match, and the best choice shifts with the enemy draft.
Arcana Build That Fits
Fate is the only one of the ten red arcana that leans defensive, which makes it the default here.
This is a role-wide recommendation, not one tuned for this hero specifically.

Counters & Synergies

Countered-by and synergy picks are this site's own reading, based on each hero's kit. What the official app publishes is how often heroes are picked together (see "Frequently Paired With" below); it does not publish any rating of how well they match up.
Frequently Paired With
The figures are the "match rate" published by the official in-game HoK Camp: how often these heroes ended up on the same team (fetched 2026-08-14). It is not a win rate, so a higher number does not mean a stronger pairing.
Popular Item Builds
The order matches the in-game display. The win rate covers matches played with that build, so player skill is mixed in. Taken on 2026-08-25.
Skills

Passive Skill: Resolute Will
After using Righteous Fervor and No Retreat, Xiang Yu gains different enhanced Basic Attacks. Stocks up to 2 charges.

Skill 1: Righteous Fervor
His next Basic Attack is enhanced into a vertical chop that deals 445 (250 + 100% physical attack + 80% extra physical attack) physical damage and is guaranteed to be a critical hit with a base critical damage of 150%.

Strategy Guide
A tank who becomes hardest to kill at the brink — 40% damage reduction kicks in below 30% Health. His knockbacks and attack-down debuff dull the enemy's edge exactly when late-game fights peak.
Best for: Players who want to be the wall that holds at the last moment, and who understand what an attack debuff is truly worth.
The charge shoves enemies along its path, so angle it to push them toward your team. The slash at the end launches them for 0.75s. That window is for the vertical chop, which is always a critical hit. Enhanced Basic Attacks stock up to two charges, so casting Skill 2 first and swinging both afterward is equally fine.
Roar first — 30% less enemy attack damage for 3.5s makes the charge-up far cheaper. Skill 3 hits harder the lower Xiang Yu's Health falls, up to 50% extra, and 20% of the damage dealt returns as Health. His Health cannot drop below 1 during the charge, and enemies the blade catches are stunned for 0.75s and take that extra 50%. Falling under 30% Health adds 40% damage reduction, but only for 6s and only once every 90s.
These combos are not official data. They are this site's own write-up, built only from the skill data transcribed from the in-game display; nothing that the skill text does not state is included.
- •Gets tougher as he gets lower via the unkillable Ultimate and 40% damage reduction
- •Skill 2's 30% attack cut suppresses an entire team's damage
- •Excellent peel with knockback and knock-up to protect his carries
- •The low-HP Ultimate hits far harder than a tank has any right to
- •Skill 1 is his only movement and can't cross walls — kiting ruins him
- •The Ultimate's charge-up is telegraphed and easy to sidestep
- •Missing the blade's edge means no stun and no bonus damage
- •Low damage and low pressure while his HP bar is still full
The lane badge at the top of this page reads Clash, following the official stats. The advice below assumes a roaming pick. On the global server, roam is his standard assignment. Attach to your marksman from level 1 and play the bodyguard: in skirmishes, Skill 1's knockback exists to bat divers away from your carry. In trades, Skill 2 is quietly vicious — it cuts the attack damage of every enemy in range by 30% for 3.5 seconds, so slapping it on top of the enemy's engage simply deletes their trade math. Maintain HP with the empowered basic's healing, rush tank items above all else, and be there when your jungler moves for the 4-minute Tyrant.
Through the mid game, with one or two defensive items done, Xiang Yu's value is measured in gank follow-ups. Skill 1's dash carries enemies with its knockback, so the trick is angling it to shove a fleeing target back toward your team — connect the knock-up and your side's full damage lands during it. In Tyrant and mid-lane collisions, stand at the very front and stop fearing a shrinking HP bar: drop below 30% and the Passive's 40% damage reduction triggers on its own, wrecking the enemy's damage math. Weaken overchasers with Skill 2 and swallow them whole — that's the mid-game pattern.
The late game belongs to Xiang Yu. Right when enemy damage peaks, his kit peaks harder: 40% damage reduction below 30% HP, and an Ultimate that makes him unkillable — HP cannot drop below 1 — while it's active. The tank who was supposed to die first simply doesn't, and that stolen time becomes your team's counterattack window. The Ultimate also deals more and heals more the lower your HP sits, so a near-death swing hits harder than some fighters' full combos. At Overlord, soak every enemy cooldown at the front, then look for the answering blow.
The job description is short: stand at the front, get hurt, then hit back. Your opening is a choice between shoving their frontline into your team with Skill 1 or batting an assassin off your carry. Fire Skill 2 the instant enemies clump — a 30% attack cut across their whole team visibly shrinks the damage your side takes. The Ultimate is for stepping into the enemy team on low HP: super armor and the unkillable effect mean you cannot die during the charge, and the slash stuns with 50% bonus damage on connect. The moment the Xiang Yu they thought was dead swings back is the moment fights flip.
